Good health is the most important thing in our life. We have to do sports, have a good night sleep and eat lots of fruit and vegetables to stay healthy.
However, sometimes we get ill – we catch a cold, have a stomachache or some pain in our body. In that case, we call a doctor. He or she comes and examines us, then diagnoses the illness and prescribes medicines. Sometimes we have to take additional tests or see another specialist. If we want to get better, we must obey our doctor`s orders. This means taking pills, staying in bed for several days or exercising regularly.
If a people disobey their doctors, they may get worse or even die. When the illness is serious we are taken to the hospital in an ambulance. We must stay there until we get well. If we have the opportunity, we go to a sanatorium to get stronger after the illness.
There are special doctors for, who keep our teeth clean and healthy. They are called dentists. They examine our mouth and stops a toothache.
The Russian health system includes various medical institutions. There are two kinds of medical service. The governmental clinics do not charge their patients for treatment. But there are medical centres, where we have to pay money to see a doctor. Some companies give their employees medical insurance, which guarantees free of charge medical assistance.
Our clinics have very qualified and experienced doctors and use the newest medical equipment.

When we are ill, we call a doctor, and he examines us and

doctor. He takes our temperature and our pulse. He examines our

When we have toothache, we go to the dentist’s. He examines our
teeth, finds the tooth which hurts us, stops or extracts it. Now
here in Russia health system incorporates a variety of medical
institutions. The medical service in Russia is of two kinds. Some
state establishments give their employees medical insurance cards.
They guarantee the people free of charge medical assistance. Some
medical establishments charge fees for treatment.
They may be rat-her high, but our medical service now uses all
modem equipment and medicines and provides qualified medical help to
all people.

The main attention of health service in Russia is paid to prophylaxis. One of the most important tasks in the fight against different diseases is the early detection of the first signs of the disease. We pay much attention to the popularization of medical science among the population. We believe that one the main available methods of preventing the spread of diseases is health education. The press, cinema, radio and television are very helpful for this purpose.
The basic medical unit in our country is the polyclinic. We have policlinics for the adult population and for children. Ambulant patients are seen at the policlinic by the district doctors. A patient who is ill at home is visited by his district doctor. The doctor works 6 hours a day. For the district doctor this is made up of 3 hours in consultation at the policlinic and 3 hours in visiting patients in their homes.
The emergency ambulance service operates day and night and is free of charge. The ambulances are equipped by diagnostic, respiratory, anesthetic and electro-therapeutic apparatus, blood-transfusion and other equipment.
There are several specialized hospitals in Russia for the treatment of particular diseases – infections, psychiatric diseases, cancer, ophthalmological diseases and others.
Some words must be said about the Mother-and-Child Health Care Centre in Moscow. This centre concentrates effort not only on traditional problems of obstetrics and gynecology but also on research in normal physiology of the female organism. The main task of this centre is to ensure the birth of a healthy child. The centre developed new methods of disease prevention, diagnostics and treatment. Much attention in our country is paid to the scientific problems, concerning the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular, viral and oncological diseases, the problems of gerontology, medical genetics, immunology and the creation of artifical organs.
Health and Welfare
Improvements in
health care are reflected by the increase in longevity for
people in England. Life expectancy increased from 68 years to
71.8 years for males, and from 73.9 years to 77.7 years for
females.
Heart disease and
cancer are the major causes of death among men aged 50 and over
and, in recent years, among women aged 40 and over. Although
infectious diseases such as poliomyelitis and tuberculosis have
virtually disappeared.
The National
Health Service provides comprehensive medical services for every
resident of England.
Doctors,
dentists, opticians, and pharmacists work within the service as
independent contractors.
Social services
are provided through local authority social service departments.
The services are
